Year 7 No 5 - January 1984
Callander and District A&F Club held their first meeting in the Glengarry hotel on 15th December and the amount of folk who turned up that night was very encouraging, especially as we had only advertised by word on mouth locally.
Of course, you just have to mention the magic name of Bill Black and family as guests artistes and enthusiasts of Scottish dance music know they are in for a treat.
The room was so full there were people sitting on the stairs outside the door and even more in the lounge-bar across the hall where an open coal fire added to the warm, friendly atmosphere.
Local couple Ann and Danny McCroary have recently bought the hotel and intend extending the room to allow for another 20 seats.
Each player who came along read like a guest list – Tommy Walker, Duncan McCallum, Gregor Lowrie, Scott Bennet, Bob Thomson, Bill Black, Andy Marshall, Kevan Walker, Kirsty Bisset – even Jim Cleland popped in later after he’d finished playing with Jim MacLeod’s Band. Eric Smith came all the way from Bearsden to play mouth organ, accompanied by his friend Alex Primrose on guitar.
Ian Robertson was on fiddle, backing players were Neil McMillan and Mel McLaren on bass fiddle and Gus Millar on drums. And last, but by no means least, Duncan Black on keyboard.
We even had a song from Danny who is manager of the local Dreadnought Hotel.
Our Chairman Tommy Walker wishes to express our appreciation and tanks to everyone who came along, especially Bill, Ann and Duncan Black and those of you who donated so generously to the raffle.
Meetings will be held on the second Thursday of each month.
