Year 20 No 7 - April 1997
Our March club night on the first Thursday of the month was again well attended despite the prevailing inclement weather. The severe gale may have caused the cancellation of the afternoon ferry sailing from Ullapool but it did not stop enthusiasts, some travelling over 30 miles, from attending the British Legion in Stornoway for an evening of good music performed in a friendly atmosphere. Highly therapeutic!
Archie McKillop, who needs no introduction to music lovers on the Island and beyond, had the main spot. Archie came all the way from south of Tarbert to give a fine performance, playing sets of reels, jigs, waltzes etc and, of course, 6/8 and 2/4 marches which he plays on his piano accordion with phrasing and feeling that would do many a piper proud! He was supported on keyboards by Violet and on drums by David, who backed all the players on the night. Other stalwarts who did a spot were Colin and Calum Murdo (piano accordions), Alex on the 3-row and Donnie ‘Loudie’ on his trusty fiddle. Donnie also did a couple of enjoyable spots with his fiddle group. He certainly deserves much acclaim for the great work he does to restore interest in an instrument which has for too long been in decline on the Island. Well done Donnie, more power to your elbow!
Unexpected, but most welcome visitors to the Club were top Scottish Dance Band leader Allan McIntosh from Benderloch and his drummer friend David Cameron od Oban, who were in Lewis to visit relations and friends. They gave a few popular selections ably accompanied by Violet, our ‘first lady’ of the ivories! We look forward to another evening of fine music from Allan when he and his Broadcasting Band play for our Christmas Dance in the British Legion on 19th December.
Our April functions have been put back to the second Thursday and Friday so as not to clash with the prestigious Pipe Major Donald Macleod M.B.E. Memorial Competition on Friday, 4th being run by The Lewis and Harris Piping Society. We wish then every success.
The Club closes for the summer and will re-open on the first Thursday in September when our guests will be Bill Black and his SDB.
