Celebrity Luncheon at Invercarse Hotel, June 2019
by Charlie Kirkpatrick
Now that the dust has settled after another action packed AGM and Celebrity Luncheon, which was held this year at the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee, it is time to relax and reflect on an eventful afternoon. By all accounts, the Celebrity Luncheon seems to have been an outstanding success, with many positive comments and feedback. In my view, a major reason for this was the venue of Invercarse Hotel which excelled in both facilities and location. The function was held in the ballroom and although we had a large crowd of 187, there was ample room for everyone to be able to move about the tables. Our thanks go to Martina Whiting and her staff at the hotel for an excellent meal served in a helpful, friendly manner.
We had the largest attendance ever, with guests coming from all over Scotland including Mick and Trisha Rawlings, keen Scottish Country dancers from Oxford, who were attending for the first time and who assured me as they left that they had enjoyed the day so much they would be back next year. Despite the large crowd everything seemed to work like clockwork with everyone seated an fed on time and the après meal musicians expertly marshaled by our compere John Carmichael, who regaled the audience with jokes and anecdotes from his lengthy career in the Scottish dance music scene. Our BAFFI Awards followed the meal and they were won and presented as follows :-
Guest Artiste of the Year – Leonard Brown
CD of the Year – Leonard Brown
Club Supporter of the Year – Billy Hutton
Club of the Year – The Button Key Club (Windygates)
It is worth of mention that to accept this final award we had Bruce Lindsay who has recently retired after many years as Chairman of the Club and also Tommy Birrell who is the new Club Programmer. We wish Bruce well in his retirement.
Of course, no Celebrity Luncheon would be complete without our celebrities, namely our four worthy guests of Honour: Billy Craib, Margaret Smith, Dochie McCallum and Davie Stewart. All four gave heartfelt acceptance speeches with wit and humour which reflected their different spheres of involvement with our music. Billy and Davie are known for their many years playing with top Scottish bands, Margaret for her involvement with the Banchory S&R Society and Banchory A&F Club and Dochie for just being the gentleman that he is.
All the awards and speeches were interspersed with music of the highest quality organised by our Vice Chairman Iain Cathcart; and even as we said our goodbyes the music was still going strong because Dochie, Neil McMillan and many others got their instruments out and were ‘giving it laldy’ with a massive jam session. Thanks are due to our hard working sound engineer Derek Hamilton and also to Susan and Shona MacFadyen for organising the raffle, ably assisted by our champion raffle ticket seller Marina Bruce.
That’s it over for another year folks, but remember to put the date 28th June 2020 in your diary. Tickets will be available any time after 1st March 2020.
Tom Gold in conversation with Joan Gold
by Tom Gold Snr
Not much doing at Coalburn just now with the club being off for the summer months. However I happened to meet with fiddler Tom Gold and we had a wee blether which went something like this:-
What influenced you to take up the fiddle rather than the accordion?
Well, my big brother came hame frae school one day and said if he caught me touching his accordion again he would punch me on the nose!
Now that you mention Jim, is he still playing the accordion?
Aye, but he had a bit of luck when he first started; Charlie Todd frae Thankerton gave him his first lesson but for some reason he couldn’t take him for his second lesson and Jim went to Keith Dickson. That was a close shave!
Did you try the competition scene when you were younger?
Aye but I didnae win much, there was this young lassie frae Shetland who was in my age group and naebody could beat her, her name was Maggie Adamson . Ah did dae well at the Mod yin year, Maggie wisnae playing that day I think she wiz awa sailin her boat.
What are your ambitions and worst fears regarding the music you play ?
I hope to appear on the front cover of the Box and Fiddle magazine one day and my worst fear is that Charlie Todd frae Thankerton asks me to play in his dance band.
Do you enjoy playing for dancing?
When we go oot playing we like to play the music we enjoy and don’t really worry too much about the dancers. We don’t get asked to dae as mony dances as we used to.
You must have visited some exciting places when playing. What’s your favourite place ? Coalburn under three feet o’ snow takes some beating!
You still havn’t flown the nest yet but if your house was on fire what would you save?
Ma twa labrador dugs. They don’t actually stay in the hoose but I widnae like them to be scared o’ the fire engine. Ma mither and faither wid hae tae take their chance alang wae the budgie.
What will you do today?
This morning I had free range biled eggs fae Charlie Todd o’ Thankerton. This afternoon I will read June’s edition of Box and Fiddle magazine. I’m always a month behind because there’s about 30 folk read the mag afore it gets to me. Tonight I will eat road kill chicken that I bumped intae the other night in Thankerton.
I thanked Tom for this interesting wee blether and let him go on his way. He was whistling a new tune which we may hear some day.
