Editorial
This has been a terribly sad month for traditional music; we have lost three stalwarts, Alex Sutherland (whose obituary appears on Page 34) and, from the Accordion nd Fiddle club scene, John Anderson of Biggar and John Reid of Ayr. These gentlemen have given so much to music over the years, indeed we have pictures in this month’s issue of John Reid being presented with the award for Club Supporter of the Year. Their passing leaves a huge gap. We hope to carry obituaries for John Anderson and John Reid next month. I spoke with John Reid for some time at the NAAFC Ceilidh, and he was over the moon he had won – in fact he was bemoaning the fact that he’d have to write another thank you letter, having also been nominated last year!
We hope you enjoy the pages about our main event. Thank you to Robin Ellis, Nicol McLaren and Phil Cunningham for taking photographs, and to Robin Ellis for writing the article.
Hope you’re having a great summer.

Celebrity Luncheon
by Robin Ellis
Who would have believed it – the middle of June and the morning started off with rain, thunder, and even fog or Scotch mist as some would prefer to call it. However, despite this it was a full house in the two rooms at The Huntingtower Hotel, Perth set aside for the AGM.
Before lunch there was a chance to view the ever growing collection of accordions shown by Caroline hunt. The instrument seems to have had an incredible history over the last 150 years. Some are tiny; some are what we now call full size. Do you like to play long thin keys, short fat keys, square keys, big buttons, little buttons, or even a choice of both on the same instrument? Some accordions are round, some square, some octagonal, some look like saxophones, some look more like old gramophones, some even look like accordions, it seems endless. Why it has never been accepted as a serious musical instrument remains a mystery to me and I expect to most of our readers. There is just about every variation you could think of. I gather, talking to Caroline, that it was only about one-third of her collection on display – I wonder what other treasures she has at home!
After this came the usual excellent lunch although service was somewhat slower this year apparently due to it being Father’s Day, and a considerable number of lucky fathers were being treated to lunch in the hotel dining room by their devoted offspring.
So at about 3.15, lunch was cleared away and the proceedings began. As always it was a mixture of presentations, music and comedy. The MC was Bobby Harvey who bounced the whole afternoon along in his own inimitable way with plenty of humorous stories. For some reason the Scots and the Irish seem to be much better at story telling than the English – I wonder why!
The main guests of the year were :
Ken Mutch, producer of BBC’s ‘Take the Floor’.
Robert Whitehead, leader of one of the few English Scottish dance bands and founder of his local Accordion and Fiddle Club.
The late Bobby Coghill, best described as personality and ‘musician extraordinaire’. His trophy was accepted by the family.
The presentations were, as in past years, made by Chairman Nicol McLaren. Full biographies of these guests have appeared in the B&F so I will not duplicate them here, suffice to say that they all richly deserve the honour bestowed on them by the NAAFC.
The BAFFI award winners were :
CD of the Year – Duncan (Dochie) McCallum and his ‘Naethin’ Ower Fancy’, presented by Phil Cunningham.
Guest Artist of the Year – Bill Black, on this occasion received by his wife Ann, as he was unable to be present, presented by Ken Mutch.
Club Supporter of the Year – John Reid, a supporter of many and various Clubs, presented by Joan Blue.
Club of the Year – Campsie, presented by Robert Whitehead.
On a personal note I must say I couldn’t agree more with the choice of CD – it is superb. It just goes to prove that it’s never too late; you can become famous at any age. As for Campsie, Margaret and I have always been made to feel most welcome when making one of our all too infrequent visits, however we have learnt to get there early – that is if you want a seat!
The musical entertainment was of its usual high quality with the now expected varied and assorted combinations of musicians, but somehow, each producing an excellent band sound.
We had accordionists – Nicol McLaren, Jennifer Cruickshank, John Carmichael, Phil Cunningham, David Scott, Neil Copland, Lorna Mair, Ian Thomson, Craig Paton, Robert Whitehead, Susan MacFadyen, Graham Whitehead, Dochie McCallum, Michael Philip, Roya McLean and Richard Ross.
Fiddlers – Bobby Harvey, Judith Linton, Mo Rutherford, Gill simpson, Shona McFadyen, Willie Johnstone and Roddy Matthews.
Pianists – Dennis Morrison, Ann Thomson, Gill Simpson, Pam Wilkie, Neil McMillan, Jacqui MacDonald and Mo Rutherford.
Bass players – Suzanne Croy, Gary Glewinsky and Neil McMillan.
Drummers – Gus Millar and Martin Lamb.
There were also a number of other well-known faces present who were not playing either due to shortage of time or because they maybe preferred to just sit and watch for a change. I spotted amongst the assembled company, George Stirrat, Bobby Crowe, Jimmy Yeaman, Doug Cargill, Morag Robertson, Charlie Todd, Jack Cooper, Joan Blue and Addie Harper and I’m sure one or two more. I apologise if I have missed anybody out but with so many ‘names’ present it becomes quite a task remembering them all. Oh! – and taking photographs as well.
The evening ended with the usual grand stramash. There were some 16 players taking part, I think, although I couldn’t be quite sure as they kept coming and going! For the first item The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen they were joined by Ken Mutch as vocalist – quite an event.
Our thanks go to Jim and Helen Balneaves for the organisation once again and of course to all those others who helped. I gather that the last Sunday in June has been booked for 2006 at The Huntingtower so I look forward to meeting everybody there once again.
