Year 8 No 3 November 1984
The King’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen, was our venue for the opening night of the season, when our guests for the evening were the Wallochmor Ceilidh Band.
We started the evening with our usual stramash, just to get some feeling into our audience, for what was to come later. Iain Henderson on fiddle was our opener for the night, with Paul Johnstone, accordion, and Hugh Gebbie, drums giving him some backing, with Iain playing to his usual high standard. This was followed by John Lang playing his button box, and a very good selection too.
Douglas Callan from Lesmahagow – making his debut at the EK Club – was next. I think he was a bit nervous to start with but settled down quickly to play a few nice tunes for our enjoyment. We hope you will come back Douglas.
Making a welcome return to the club (in his bathchair) was our ‘Grandpappy’ Dunbar (Andrew) from Dunblane. He played some of his own compositions, one of which he named ‘The EK A&F Club’. Thank you Andrew, we enjoyed it. He was backed by hugh on second box and Bill Sinclair jnr on piano.
Eddie Gallagher, fiddle, and Bill Sinclair snr on piano, with Bill jnr this time on drums, played a nice waltz selection followed by a few jigs. Thanks boys, it was very good. To close this half before our guest band came on we had our friend Norrie Williams, box, Neil McMillan, piano, and Hugh Gebbie, drums. This, from remarks heard later, was a treat to listen to. It was quite funny though to see some of the audience looking up to the ceiling and wondering what Norrie was looking at whilst playing.
What can one say about the Wallochmor that hasn’t already been said, it’s just ‘magic’. The patter of Sandy and Freeland is good too, probably more so since Sandy got ‘married’!! He could end up yet as a ‘plumber’ with all his remarks about ‘pipes’!!
It was now time for stovies and raffle. This we got over fairly quickly and on to our first players of the second half, namely Karen Higgins and Graham Edwardson with Hugh on drums. Karen and Graham played some super stuff. Nice to see them at our Club again and congrats to Graham after his broadcast with the Oakbank Sound.
Bill Sinclair jnr then came on to change the mood of playing, he certainly jazzed it up on the piano, with Hugh on drums. A very versatile lad is our Bill and good too.
Another newcomer to our Club was Michael Garvin – a very nice lad and very good accordionist. He had that experienced old-timer Adrian Hannah on second box and all the way from Grangemouth Audrey McQuillan on paino. Come again folks, we enjoyed it.
We also had some visitors from Canada whom I’m sure, with all the others who were at the Club, had a very enjoyable night indeed. We all hope that our next meeting will see the return of our friend Justine Tennant who had a bad accident, and with her ‘roadie’ Oor Wullie.
Thank you to everyone for coming and to all who helped out on the night. Also to Marion Gebbie who once again is out MC for the season.
Our next meeting is on 25th October in the Kink’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen, our guests, The Craigowl SDB (ex-Dundee Junior Band). Come along and enjoy your night in very nice surroundings.
OCTOBER
Where did all our regular players go this month? We had exactly three players in the hall at 8 o’clock.
However, small details like that don’t worry us – we just carry on and make the best of it.
Paul Johnstone certainly got to play his box this evening – accompanied by Hugh Gebbie on drums. Eddie Gallagher was next with his fiddle, with Paul doing the backing.
Hugh was next – this time on accordion and again Paul on second box. Whilst this was going on – our Justine Tennant – back after her recent accident, without fiddle – decided to give us a wee tune if she could borrow Eddie’s fiddle. This she did, with Hugh doing the backing, this time on box.
We then ‘found’ a young lady in the audience who could play the accordion, Miss Gunn by name and she borrowed Hugh’s box. Some permutations folks!!
Jimmy Divers from Cleland was then spied coming in the door, he hardly got his entrance money on the table and was ‘on’. Well done Jim.
Our band, The Craigowl’ who were our guests, were arriving at this time, with manager Tom Clark, who was very quickly hijacked , fitted out with young Kevin’s box and was on stage before he knew what was going on. Many thanks Tom for your ‘tunies’.
Now it was guest artiste time – and if the band have played any better elsewhere, then I’m sure we would all like to know. They were just super, they deserved all the nice remarks I heard from the audience. Time now for stovies and raffle.
We started the second half with Paul and Hugh – what a reliable pair of beings they are!!
Our guests very kindly allowed us the use of their electric piano – the meant that Bill Sinclair could back Eddie on fiddle, with Hugh on drums.
Jimmy Divers was next, with his 5 row button box, having now recovered from the shock of going on so quickly in the first half.
In the meantime Norrie Williams had come in (late, but very welcome) he too was on in a hurry, but not before he captured Pat McNulty for piano and Hugh on drums. Norrie gave us his usual ‘stoatin’ performance.
Hugh again on box with Paul second (wot again!) were last to play before it was guest time.
I can only repeat what I said before – the band were super and we will certainly have them back to our Club. Thank you Craigowl and to the mums and dads who were with them.
Next Club night is 29th November in the King’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen, only five minutes drive from Hampden Park. Our guests are the Iain MacPhail SDB. Come along and enjoy an evening of good music in nice surroundings.
Year 8 No 4 December 1984
The King’s Room of the King’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen, held a good turnout of players and listeners at the monthly meeting of the EK Accordion and Fiddle Club. Thank you to all who came along, I’m sure you all enjoyed it.
Our first player of the night was once again Justine Tennant on fiddle, giving her usual good selections and performance. ‘Oor Wullie’, her roadie, was not feeling too well and had to hand over his duties to another!!
Next was Gordon Thomson on accordion. This lad gets better each time we hear him.
Morag Dunn, having got over her first-night nerves, brought along her own box this time and played a nice, if short, selection. Well done Morag.
Lawrence Monaghan came along to see us, minus box. He borrowed Hugh Gebbie’s and with Grant Crawford on keyboard (thanks to Dave Flockhart) and Hugh on drums, gave us a smashing lot of jigs and reels. Come and see us again Lawrence.
Grant and Hugh had to stay on stage to back Iain Henderson on fiddle. He certainly wallops through a lively set or two. Thanks Iain.
Visiting the Club for the first time were three young players – James Rooney, David Watson and Allison Watson (not related) from Motherwell and Newarthill, playing as a trio. Allison was in charge of the microphone to tell us the tunes they were playing. They were just super and even called on Hugh to back them on drums. It was very obvious a lot of practice had been done. Well played, boys and girl. Come back again soon.
This took us up to guest artiste time and our band for the evening was the ever populat Iain MacPhail SDB.
When you hear Iain and his lads play, it makes you want to put a ‘for sale’ notice on your own accordion. The selection of tunes and standard of playing is just pure magic. What a treat to listen to.
This took us to stovies and raffle time and I must say a big thank you to the very kind and generous people who gave raffle prizes.
Time against us, we now pushed on with the second half. Again, first timers to the Club, we had Ken and Sheena MacLean, fiddle and piano, with a well played Scottish selection. Thank you both and please come again.
Another young lass we haven’t seen for some time, Una Bryson, played her tunes in her own immaculate style. Don’t stay away so long next time Una.
Eddie Gallagher was on with his fiddle. He has come up with some good selections recently, with Grant and Hugh doing the backing.
That excellent fiddle player Jim Devlin came on stage next, playing some great stuff. You should hear his Irish jigs and reels folks. Stuart Lochie, another very welcome visitor from Armadale, was next on parade and gave us a selection of well known waltz tunes.
Nelson Callan called on Grant and Hugh to back them playing some nice pipe marches. We like this lad’s easy going style.
Grant Crawford then had the pick of the players and was on stage with a five-piece, or was it Grant joining the MacPhail group? He still comes away with some cracking tunes.
Norrie Williams was our last player of the evening. He had Grant on keyboard and called Hugh on stage for drums. No need to say how Norrie plays. Everyone knows by now he is super. Thank you Norrie.
Guest band time again. We cannot say more except thanks to Iain, Brian, Davie and Graham for some terrific toetapping music and hope we can have you back soon.
We also must put on record our thanks to Mr Ian Rae, manager of the hotel for allowing us some ‘extra time’. We really do appreciate his kindness to us.
We do not have a meeting in December. Our next meeting will be the last Thursday in January – the 31st in the King’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen. Again for your information and direction – only five minutes drive from Hampden Park.
Our guest will be that lad with the nimble fingers – Raymond Chuchuk. Hope to see you there.
We at East Kilbride wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Guid New Year.
Hugh Gebbie
Year 8 No 7 March 1985
EK A&F Club was held, as usual, in the King’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen. We started the evening with Paul Johnstone, on accordion and Hugh Gebbie on drums.
Justine Tennant with fiddle was next, helped this month by her roadie ’Oor Willie’, who took over the microphone and thanked everyone for the get-well cards he had received whilst in hospital. Nice to see him back in the fold. Justine gave us her usual good selection.
Jim Divers was then called to the stage and played a nice selection of pipe marches. He certainly comes away with some lovely tunes. Thanks again Jim.
Oor Hielan’ man Iain Henderson (fiddle) was next to play. He was reinforced by Norman Skinner (from Dunblane) on keyboard and John Higgins on drums. Again Iain played in his own easy style ; nice to listen to.
Norman and John were asked to stay on stage and accompanied Davie Coke (accordion) from Lesmahagow. Once more a nice selection from Davie. Thank you.
Norrie Williams, looking a wee bit worried, on his own (poor Sheila was in bed with flu) asked Alan Kitchen (keyboard) and Hugh (drums) to accompany him on stage, gave Alan his ‘copy’ (with instructions!!) and then treated us to the sound of the ‘Williams magic’.
Time now for our guests – Alec MacArthur (The General), Jennifer Forrest (second box), Ian Wilson (keyboard) and Alec asked Hugh to do the drums for him. We were then to hear 40 minutes of super music with, of course, Alec telling some tales. He also invited our audience to dance the Pride of Erin Waltz – which some of them did!!
All too quickly the first half passed and it was time for stovies and raffle. Again our thanks to everyone who donated prizes.
It was a pleasure to welcome visitors from other Clubs. We do hope they enjoyed the evening and will come back again.
We started the second half with Norman Skinner (electronic accordion) who at last made it to our Club with Bill Sinclair Jnr, on keyboard and John Wiggins, drums. We hope that Norman, after giving us a very good selection, will come back soon and give us some more. Thank you.
Old faithfuls Eddie Gallagher (fiddle) and Bill Sinclair Snr (keyboard) with Bill Jnr this time on drums played a goodly number of tunes for our pleasure.
Mr Andrew Dunbar, from Dunblane, on accordion formed his group with Norman on second box, Alf McConnachie (keyboard) and Hugh on drums. This turned out to be a very pleasant sound. Thank you sir!
Continuing with a pleasant sound we had our own brilliant fiddle player Jim Devlin, backed by Pat McNulty on piano. We understand that Jim has been, or will be booked, to do a guest artiste spot at a certain Club in Biggar. Club Secretaries please take note, he’s some player.
Our last players before guest time were Jim McCrae on accordion and Alan Kitchen, keyboard. This is great stuff to listen to. Thanks again lads for coming along.
We record our thanks at this point to Marion Gebbie, our MC.
Guest time again. One can’t say more than it was super-duper music. Everyone enjoyed it and we would hope to have them back in the not-too-distant future.
Thank you Alec and the band who stayed on stage to finish with a grand stramash.
Our next night is Thursday 28th March, when our guest will be that super accordionist Alan Roy.
The King’s Park Hotel, Rutherglen, was our venue for the opening night of the season, when our guests for the evening were the Wallochmor Ceilidh Band.
